Who controls the land and minerals in the former Bantustans of South Africa – chiefs, the state or landholders?
Disputes are taking place around the ownership of resources, decisions about their exploitation and who should benefit.
On 20 July 2021, these contested histories and struggles and their legal ramifications were discussed by William Beinart, historian and co-editor of a new book on land, Land, Law and Chiefs in Rural South Africa, together with contributors Advocate Geoff Budlender, Dineo Skosana, researcher at the Society, Work and Politics Institute (SWOP), Khumisho Moguerane from the Department of History at the University of Johannesburg. Advocate Tembeka Ngcukaitobi, author of The Land Is Ours: Black Lawyers and the Birth of Constitutionalism in South Africa was the 5th discussant.
The event was co-hosted with SWOP and LARC, and Nolundi Luwaya of LARC as chair.
