Aninka Claassens has been engaged in the struggle for land rights in South Africa since the early 1980s.
As a member of the Black Sash, she worked with communities who resisted forced removals during the apartheid era. She was also a senior researcher for the Land Rights Project at Wits University. She has done extensive work in the Rural Women’s Action Research Programme (RWAR) which seeks to enable people living in the rural areas to assert their rights and hold authorities accountable. Today, as the Director of the Land and Accountability Research Centre (LARC) at the University of Cape Town, she continues to strive for the recognition and protection of land rights in the former homelands.
