The Pietermaritzburg High Court ruled on the 11th of June 2021 that residential leases concluded by the Ingonyama Trust with community members living on Ingonyama Trust administered land are invalid because it is a violation of their constitutional and customary law property rights. The Ingonyama Trust Board has been ordered to refund all the money that has been paid by community members in terms of a residential lease.
